ASANTE - Prototype (SanteJazz Remix) [Produced by Atu x Asante]
The story behind the video…
So I directed, shot, and edited (with some personal touch from Asante himself) this video for Asante and Atu. Originally we planned this piece to be an intimate live performance. As time got closer and closer to the day we were going to do it, seemed more fit to just use Asante for the video and one girl (Karina). We decided that the video would have projections of some sort, but didn’t know exactly how. I discovered some footage and pieced it together for the video.
The final result was a dreamy and faded approach to how someone sees another. The other day in my class at the University of Michigan we were discussing rorschachs and how people see them. Goes along with my favorite quote. “In this treacherous world nothing is either truth or lie; everything depends on the color of the crystal one looks through.” We all have different ideas of what is beautiful and what is the norm and who is our “queen.” Simply put this video encapsulates what Andre’s funnier version didn’t — the fact that men see women as attractive objects sometimes. Yet in the end of this video Asante is tearing down those social constructs and letting him see his own reality, not letting outside society shape who he can and will love. Although remember, I see this video in this light. You can take it anyway you want to as a viewer.
Every woman will start out as a prototype, it’s up to you to decide if she is the one you want to ride with.
I hope you enjoy this video as much as I did making it and coming up with the concept with a little of help from Asante. His true colors really do shine on this one.
